About Nikfaindar

Nikfaindar is a name desk for South Asian scripts. Type a name and we aim to give back three things together: what the name means and which language it comes from, how it is correctly written in Urdu, Hindi, Bengali and other Indic scripts, and how that spelling behaves when it is decorated for a profile. Meaning comes first, spelling second, decoration third.

Who runs Nikfaindar

The site is run by the Nikfaindar editorial desk. We do not publish under invented names or borrowed credentials, and no real person’s or company’s identity is attached to this site. You can reach the desk at [email protected] or through the contact page.

What the site is for

Many readers in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh search for a name’s meaning in Urdu or its spelling in another script and get either a meaning with no source or a spelling with no explanation. Nikfaindar is built to answer both on one page, with the source shown, so parents, students and anyone writing their own name in a new script can check what they are copying.

Sources we use, in order of preference

  1. Published dictionaries and etymological references for the language the name comes from (Arabic, Persian, Sanskrit, Turkic, Bengali and others).
  2. The Unicode Standard and its code charts for script letters and their official names, credited to unicode.org under the Unicode Terms of Use.
  3. Reputable published name references, used only to confirm usage, never as the only source for a meaning.

Every name entry shows the meaning, the language of origin, the spelling in each script with its letters named, a named source for each claim, and the date we checked it. Transliteration pages state which romanisation scheme they use.

When sources disagree

Names that crossed languages often carry more than one reading. When reputable sources disagree, the page shows both readings and says which source gives which. When no reliable source exists, the page says the meaning is not established instead of inventing one. A meaning without a source is not published. The full rules are in our editorial policy.

Cultural and religious care

Names carry religion, region and family. We describe origin and usage as facts and stop there. We never rank names by caste or community, never present one community as better than another, and never treat a surname as a claim about a person. Religious names are explained as etymology and usage, not as religious instruction or advice on what a family should name a child.

Corrections

If you find a wrong meaning or spelling, email [email protected] with the page and what you believe is correct, and your source if you have one. We check every report, answer it, and record accepted corrections with the date.

How each entry is checked and dated

Every spelling on a name page is shown as real Unicode text, never as an image. Before a page goes live, the desk checks that Urdu text is marked as Urdu, set in a Nastaliq font and written right to left, and that Hindi and Bengali spellings use the correct Unicode letters. Each page records the date of that check. When a reader tells us a script shows as empty boxes on their device, the page notes it.
