Editorial Policy

This editorial policy explains how the Nikfaindar editorial desk researches, checks, dates and corrects every name entry: each meaning and each Urdu, Hindi or Bengali spelling names its source and checked date, disagreements are shown rather than hidden, and a meaning without a source is not published.

Sources, in order of preference

  1. Published dictionaries and etymological references for the language of origin (Arabic, Persian, Sanskrit, Turkic, Bengali and others).
  2. The Unicode Standard for script letters and their official names, credited to unicode.org.
  3. Reputable published name references, used only to confirm usage, never as the only source for a meaning.

What every name entry records

How spellings are checked

Spellings are entered as Unicode text, never as images. Before a page is published, the desk checks that Urdu text is marked as Urdu, set in a Nastaliq font and written right to left, and that Hindi and Bengali spellings use the correct Unicode letters. Decorated forms for profiles are labelled with their character count. When we have not checked whether a game or app accepts a form, the page says “not checked” instead of guessing; when a reader reports that a form is blocked or shows as boxes, the page records the report and its date.

When sources disagree

Both readings are shown and attributed. If no reliable source exists, the page says the meaning is not established.

Cultural and religious care

We describe origin and usage as facts and stop there. We never rank names by caste or community, never present one community as superior, and never treat a surname as a claim about a person.

Corrections and recheck

Readers can report errors to [email protected]. Every report is checked against our sources and answered; accepted corrections are logged with the date. Entries are rechecked whenever a correction is accepted or a source is updated. More about the desk is on the about Nikfaindar page.
